“Grau-Garriga. In Memoriam” is an exhibition of the work of this eminent artist, which can be seen in Vallpalou Foundation from November 29th, 2012 to March 3rd, 2013. This unique exhibition can only be seen in Lleida, since it does not hold any more exposure this author until 2015, then working on a major retrospective of his institutional, to be held this year, simultaneously in Spain and France.
Currently, the city of Lleida artist receives exposure Grau Garriga, uniting all textiles with the spirit of this beautiful cultural capital of the West and is the most important thing that has made this artist in the city of Lleida. The exhibition consists of twenty large-scale works, including paintings and tapestries textiles, which are mainly in the 80s and have been selected by exhibition curator Joseph Canals. GRAU-GARRIGA “In Memoriam” is devoted to Grau Garriga, who died in France in 2011, at age 82, where he lived for some time. In the Foundation Vallpalou you can see some works created by the artist during the 60s and 70s, in the House Aymat Sant Cugat del Valles, home of the renowned Catalan School of Tapestry and artist’s studio. This is a unique opportunity to see an exhibition of the work of so wide degree Garriga, because until a few years will not make any exhibition of its kind in Catalonia. Grau-Garriga (Sant Cugat del Valles, February 18 1929 – St Mathurin sur Loire, August 29 2011) with the passage of time has achieved a remarkable stability so that today his work becomes all referential capture the intensity of contemporary artistic research in Catalonia, the rest of the state and abroad. The artist is widely recognized as the architect of the renovation of the concepts in the elaboration of Tapestry, and is considered the main creator of contemporary tapestry. In Saint Maruthi-sur-Loire (France) where the artist lived for the last 20 years of his life and where he is buried, opened in June his mural at the Church of the population. This mural, which was left unfinished, serves as testimony to the work that he created last. It is a work that, thinking about pacifism, entitled “The door to peace.” Grau Garriga also contributed to the extent of the work done in the Catalan School Catalan territory by Tapestry: Charles Delclaux in Girona, Tarragona and Jose Royo both these cities becoming centers of expansion of the school.
