Terrae
THE EARTH AS ORIGIN AND INSPIRATION
The earth as origin and inspiration in Vallpalou’s artwork bases its initial point on five raku ceramics: oxidized, crisscrossed, cracked material. And its continuity and counterpoint is based on the selection of acrylics and monotypes (done between 2006 and 2008), all of which make up the Terrae exhibition.
Bidimensional compositions reflect a double view. On the one hand, the landscape becomes a source of inspiration: signs seem to be inspired by the fields, by the grooves of all these places where Vallpalou likes to step, study and take pictures. But as calligraphy, tatoo or footprint there also is the reflection of an introspective point of view. Finally, scenarios invite us to reflect.
This is a display that was exhibited by Vallpalou at the Coma Estadella Art Gallery of the Col•legi de Aparelladors i Arquitectes Tècnics from November 14th until December 5th 2008.
Earth on its physic dimension, dyed by the smoke and sublimated by the fire of the five raku ceramics of Vallpalou is the head of this exhibition which puts together a selection of pieces made from 2006 to 2008.
That taste for the matter is not only patent in this centenary technique originary from Japan, but also on the free forms, the cracks, the footprints that find its continuity and counterpoint at the bidimensional artworks: The two acrylics on wood who open and close a sequence completed by the eleven earth evocative monotypes, symbolic origin, habitat and inspiration of the artist. Vallpalou likes to walk at midnight along the fields and the woods. Frequently she walks with a camera, capturing the immensity of the landscape and the orography, the furrows or the most unsuspected details. Those pictures, sometimes reworked at her studio, are not only pieces of art, but also an excuse to guide us to her paintings. The references to the natural or humanized landscape are easy to see at the artworks shown here. Landscapes are evocative, yes, but there are also interior landscapes and pure forms seen through the calligraphies and signs. The projection of artist herself. Finally, these landscapes become for us symbolic spaces, reflective places and contemplative walls.
